Watchkeeping Questions

Use these answers to examine assumptions and clarify terms. They do not replace vessel procedures, training or situation-specific professional assessment.

Does an AI-generated route replace passage planning?

No. It can support appraisal and comparison, but it does not replace appropriate charts, publications, verification, monitoring or professional responsibility. The output should be examined as one contribution to the planning process. Start with the inputs.

Is AI routing the same as autonomous navigation?

No. Route recommendation, decision support and autonomous control are distinct functions. A product label does not establish its control authority or approval. Ask exactly what the system observes, recommends and controls, and under which operating conditions.

Why might the shortest route use more fuel?

Current, waves, speed profile and vessel performance can change consumption. Distance alone does not describe the energy required for a passage. A useful comparison uses consistent assumptions and explains its baseline. Read about route trade-offs.

Can AIS provide a complete traffic picture?

No. Not every object transmits AIS, and messages can be missing, delayed or incorrect. AIS should not be treated as a complete substitute for other appropriate observations. A reported intention is also not proof of a future manoeuvre.

What does a model confidence score mean?

Its meaning depends on how the system defines and validates it. It may describe an internal model score rather than a calibrated probability of a safe outcome. Ask which event the number concerns, and whether its interpretation has been tested in relevant conditions. Examine bridge prompt interpretation.

How should forecast uncertainty affect route comparison?

Compare alternatives across plausible scenarios and inspect sensitivity to important inputs. A central forecast alone can hide a fragile ranking. Scenario coverage also has limits; an outcome outside the scenarios remains possible.

Who remains responsible when software recommends a route?

Software advice does not transfer the responsibilities of the master, bridge team or other accountable parties under applicable law and procedures. The status of a recommendation should remain distinct from approval of a passage-plan amendment.

What evidence supports a claimed fuel saving?

Look for a defined baseline, comparable conditions, vessel-specific assumptions, evaluation methods and uncertainty. A headline percentage alone is insufficient. Check whether the claim comes from simulation, controlled comparison or operational observation, and whether the conditions match the intended use.

Can this website plan or monitor a real passage?

No. It offers educational explanations and a local message-drafting tool, not live charts, position monitoring, traffic assessment or a routing service. Do not use its diagrams as navigational information. Read the operational limits.
